Authorities rescue 4 near U.S.-Canada border

Authorities have rescued four people from a remote spot on the U.S.-Canada border after their guide abandoned them.

OROVILLE, Wash. —

Authorities have rescued four people from a remote spot on the U.S.-Canada border after their guide abandoned them.

Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Rogers says the four were thought to be trying to enter the U.S. illegally. They apparently used a cell phone to call for help Sunday.

Rogers says a U.S. Navy aircraft found them near Chopaka Mountain, northwest of Oroville. They were rescued late Monday, after struggling through two days of rain and cold.

Rogers says the four people, including a 5-year-old child, were taken to a hospital. The mother of the child was apparently close to hypothermia, and the others were doing well.

Danielle Suarez, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Border Patrol in Spokane, says their immigration status was still being determined.
