Rains soak Olympic National Park fires

OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK, Wash. —

Heavy rains this weekend are soaking some backcountry wildfires that have been burning in Olympic National Park all summer.

Todd Rankin, incident commander for the fires, tells the Peninsula Daily News that up to an inch and a half of rain fell Sunday in some areas of the park. He says that may be enough to all but extinguish some of the blazes.

The park reopened more than 30 miles of trails last week after fires diminished. A dozen fires have been slowly burning in the park this summer, the largest of them at 750 acres.
