Dead killer whale calf spotted near Orcas Island

Whale experts with the Marine Stranding Network are asking the public to help find a dead killer whale calf that was spotted by a boater Sunday off Orcas Island.

The Associated Press

FRIDAY HARBOR, Wash. —

Whale experts with the Marine Stranding Network are asking the public to help find a dead killer whale calf that was spotted by a boater Sunday off Orcas Island.

The Whale Museum at Friday Harbor which runs the network says the observer said the placenta was still attached.

The network’s coordinator, Amy Traxler, says searchers have been unable to find the carcass.

Network veterinarian Joe Gaydos says retrieving it could provide valuable information about the killer whale population.

Anyone finding the carcass is asked to call the Stranding Network at 1-800-562-8832.
