Recession trims Seattle traffic congestion 8%

Traffic congestion in the Seattle area is down 8 percent from last year due to the recession, according to a midyear study released today by the traffic-data firm INRIX.

Traffic congestion in the Seattle area is down 8 percent from last year due to the recession, according to a midyear study released today by the traffic-data firm INRIX.

Seattle continues to rank ninth among U.S. cities for congestion, between Boston and Philadelphia, while Los Angeles ranked first.

The worst hour to drive around here is Friday at 4 p.m. The worst bottleneck is eastbound Highway 16 in Tacoma approaching the Interstate 5 junction, where congestion occurs 51 hours a week.

The Kirkland-based firm said traffic recently "bottomed out" and will increase again as the economy improves.

More information is online at scorecard.inrix.com.
