Washington State Patrol trooper Albert Arrey investigates the scene of an accident on Beebe Bridge near Chelan that sent the cab of a semi-trailer truck loaded with boxes of apples into the Columbia River Monday at about 5 p.m. The cab nor its occupants have been found while a Chelan County Sheriff dive team is searching the river.
WENATCHEE — The Washington State Patrol says a tractor-trailer rig loaded with apples rammed a support beam of a Highway 97 bridge north of Wenatchee and plunged into the Columbia River.
Investigators say another vehicle may also have been involved. Dive teams were searching the water late Monday for the truck driver as well as for any signs of a second vehicle.
The crash just after 5 p.m. today prompted the closure of the bridge in both directions. Troopers say it caused structural damage. The Washington Department of Transportation says the bridge will be inspected Tuesday.
In the meantime, drivers are being detoured through Chelan.
The crash site at the Beebe Bridge is about 40 miles north of Wenatchee.
