Tractor-trailer rig plunges off bridge into Columbia River

The Washington State Patrol says a tractor-trailer rig loaded with apples rammed a support beam of a U.S. 97 bridge north of Wenatchee and plunged into the Columbia River.

WENATCHEE — The Washington State Patrol says a tractor-trailer rig loaded with apples rammed a support beam of a Highway 97 bridge north of Wenatchee and plunged into the Columbia River.

Investigators say another vehicle may also have been involved. Dive teams were searching the water late Monday for the truck driver as well as for any signs of a second vehicle.

The crash just after 5 p.m. today prompted the closure of the bridge in both directions. Troopers say it caused structural damage. The Washington Department of Transportation says the bridge will be inspected Tuesday.

In the meantime, drivers are being detoured through Chelan.

The crash site at the Beebe Bridge is about 40 miles north of Wenatchee.
