Seattle libraries close, city employees furloughed

Tight budgets are cutting services for Seattle residents.

The Associated Press

SEATTLE —

Tight budgets are cutting services for Seattle residents.

Seattle libraries are closed Monday and won't reopen until Sept. 8. Locking the doors and sending the librarians home for eight days will save more than $650,000.

Meanwhile, the city of Seattle expects to save up to $20 million next year by having most city workers take off 10 unpaid furlough days.

A coalition of 14 city employee unions approved the plan last week that covers nearly 6,400 workers. Uniformed police and firefighters are not part of the furlough plan.
