Seattle library branches to close for a week

All branches of the Seattle Public Library will be closed next week, part of a citywide budget-cutting plan. They will reopen Tuesday, Sept. 8.

The closure means about 700 employees will not be paid during the week.

It also means: No materials will be due and no fines will accrue, no book drops will be open, no access to the online catalog or library Web site, no library computers will be available, no mobile library services and no quick-information telephone service or programs in library meeting rooms.

The closure will save about $655,000, which will help erase a $43 million gap in the 2009 city budget. In all, the library has a goal of a 2 percent budget cut, about $1 million, this year.

What I've never understood is why it has to be ALL the libraries in the system at the same time? I mean I suppose that all for payroll...  Posted on August 27, 2009 at 5:34 AM by TrixieCupcakes. Jump to comment
Anything but cut pay and benefits. Thank your politicians and the public service unions for your closed libraries, they are hand in glove.  Posted on August 27, 2009 at 5:30 AM by mike des moines. Jump to comment
knowing this would happen wouldn't they just schedule their vacation ahead of time and get paid anyway?  Posted on August 27, 2009 at 6:15 AM by cesarchavez. Jump to comment
