Feds announce $5 million in grants to tribes in Washington

Federal officials have announced nearly $5.5 million in law enforcement grants to Native American communities in Washington state.

TULALIP — Federal officials have announced nearly $5.5 million in law enforcement grants to Native-American communities in Washington state.

The money includes more than $3.3 million in one-year community-oriented police service grants to 15 tribes. Six tribes are getting a total of seven new police officers, and one of those tribes and nine others are receiving funds for equipment and trailing.

In addition, the Tulalip, Squaxin Island and Swinomish tribes are sharing nearly $2.17 million in three-year grants from the Office on Violence Against Women.

Deputy Attorney General David W. Ogden and Associate Attorney General Thomas J. Perrelli announced the grants Wednesday after a tour of the Tulalip Reservation north of Everett.

The two are leading a Justice Department effort to improve coordination of law enforcement efforts on Indian reservations nationwide.
