The Port of Seattle has given the Nickelsville homeless encampment until Sept. 30 to leave Port property, the Port said Tuesday. The encampment, named for outgoing Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels, moved to Terminal 107 Park, at 4700 W. Marginal Way S.W., without Port permission on July 23.

Port officials considered letting Nickelsville remain at Terminal 107 for another 90 days, but the Port says it has no authority to provide temporary housing and that the encampment violates Seattle city code.

"The port has tried to provide a compassionate response to this situation while also balancing other obligations to the citizens of King County," CEO Tay Yoshitani said in a news release. "We continue to believe that the port can best assist with the difficult problem of homelessness in our community by focusing on our mission to create jobs and economic growth for King County."
