'Nickelsville' sticks for Seattle homeless camp

Mayor Greg Nickels may be going, but the "Nickelsville" name for a Seattle homeless encampment is staying, at least for now.

The Associated Press

SEATTLE —

Mayor Greg Nickels may be going, but the "Nickelsville" name for a Seattle homeless encampment is staying, at least for now.

Nickelsville spokeswoman Revel Smith says the mayor earned the name with his policies on homelessness, including sweeps to arrest camp residents for trespassing on city property, and she sees no reason to change it.

Nickels conceded defeat Friday in his bid for a third term.

Nickelsville has been forced to change locations several times. It's currently on Port of Seattle property at Terminal 107, and the camp said Friday that port and state officials are working on a deal to allow the camp to remain there for at least three months.
