Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels concedes

Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels says he has lost his bid for a third term.

Associated Press Writer

SEATTLE —

Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels says he has lost his bid for a third term.

Nickels trails two challengers with just 25.6 percent of the vote. He's 1,170 votes out of second place behind T-Mobile executive Joe Mallahan and Sierra Club activist Mike McGinn, and he's lost ground as mail-in ballots have been counted since Tuesday's primary.

Nickels says he called Mallahan and McGinn to congratulate them.

Several issues have dogged Nickels, including the city's response to a series of snowstorms in December, the Seattle SuperSonics' move to Oklahoma City and his support for building a multibillion-dollar tunnel to replace a crumbling elevated highway along the city's waterfront.
