Work to start on new Wash state data center

Construction is to start later this month in Olympia on a new $255 million state Information Services data center.

OLYMPIA, Wash. —

Construction is to start later this month in Olympia on a new $255 million state Information Services data center.

Department of Information Services spokeswoman Joanne Todd tells The Olympian newspaper that a bond sale for the project should take place this week, with groundbreaking on Olympia's east capitol campus on Aug. 20.

Last month, Rep. Reuven Carlyle, D-Seattle, questioned the project, saying the state might save money by using privately run computer server farms.

But Information Services Director Tony Tortorice says doing that would cost the state more in the short run and would not be practical for much of the equipment the state is using.
