Fire in I-5 median backs up traffic in both directions

Traffic backed up in both directions on Interstate 5 near Des Moines on Wednesday afternoon as firefighters battled a brush fire in the freeway median.

All lanes of southbound Interstate 5 and four of the freeway's five northbound lanes near Des Moines were closed for a time this afternoon as firefighters battled a brush fire in the freeway median.

The state Department of Transportation said that during firefighting efforts, traffic was backed up as much as eight miles northbound and more than four miles southbound. Northbound traffic was funneled into one lane, the department said.

The fire was reported just after 1 p.m. near South 200th Street, Department of Transportation spokeswoman Sandy Lam said.
