Lynn Gering, a longtime appraiser and administrator in the King County assessor's office, was sworn in this morning as assessor.

The Metropolitan King County Council voted unanimously to appoint Gering to the vacant position until after a new assessor is chosen in the Nov. 3 election.

The family of Rich Medved, who was acting assessor when he suffered a stroke July 14, asked the council on Friday to appoint Gering.

Medved, who was a candidate for the appointment and for election, remains hospitalized.

Former Assessor Scott Noble resigned last month, shortly before he was sentenced to jail for vehicular assault, a felony that required him to forfeit the office.

Gering has worked in the assessor's office since 1975, serving as an appraiser, chief deputy and chief appraiser.
