2 old houses hit road in Madrona move

A pair of nearly century-old houses, resting on I-beams, begin the move early Sunday from the yard at Epiphany School in Seattle's Madrona neighborhood to sites about 11 blocks away. Here, the second house rounds a corner. The planned move by Nickel Bros. had led to a standoff when neighbors complained about proposed pruning of the parklike tree canopy. However, a deal was reached allowing the houses to be saved. Nickel Bros. agreed to pay an undisclosed amount to replace the canopy with new trees and to replant or replace other trees.

Neighbors turned out to watch the slow-motion move. It required more than four dozen workers to take down and then put back in place phone lines, cables and electrical wires.
