Wash. gay partnership foes may turn in petitions

Washington state's latest expansion of domestic partnerships hangs in limbo as opponents determine if they have enough signatures to ask for a public vote.

Associated Press Writer

OLYMPIA, Wash. —

Washington state's latest expansion of domestic partnerships hangs in limbo as opponents determine if they have enough signatures to ask for a public vote.

Sponsors of Referendum 71 have an appointment with Secretary of State Sam Reed to turn in voter signatures Saturday afternoon.

To qualify for the November ballot, they need at least 120,577 valid voter signatures. Election officials suggest turning in about 150,000 as a buffer.

Campaign organizers recently said they would know for certain by Friday whether they have enough signatures to justify turning in the petitions.
