Auburn girl dies of swine flu complications

A girl from Auburn has died from complications of H1N1 swine flu influenza and underlying health conditions, according to Public Health — Seattle & King County.

A girl from Auburn has died from complications of H1N1 swine flu influenza and underlying health conditions, according to Public Health — Seattle & King County.

This is the second reported swine flu-related death in King County.

"Our hearts go out to this child's family," Public Health Director David Fleming said in a news release. "This tragedy reminds us that the H1N1 virus is still here and children, particularly those with underlying health conditions, are at increased risk for more serious infections. As we expect the virus to become more widespread in the fall, children's health will be a primary concern for us."

The girl died on July 18. Public Health did not have further details to release about the girl and said the family has requested privacy.

The first swine flu-related death in King County, in June, was a man in his 70s with multiple health problems.

Health officials are anticipating increased flu activity in the United States and locally as early as September, when most schools open for the fall, according to Public Health.

They are encouraging members of the public to make arrangements now that would allow them or their children to stay home from work or school if they become ill.
