Wash. gov heading to D.C. to talk education money

Gov. Chris Gregoire is heading to Washington, D.C., later this week to meet with President Barack Obama and Education Secretary Arne Duncan.

OLYMPIA, Wash. —

Gov. Chris Gregoire is heading to Washington, D.C., later this week to meet with President Barack Obama and Education Secretary Arne Duncan.

Gregoire will join officials from around the country Friday afternoon in discussing federal money for education, including the "Race to the Top" program.

At the meeting, the Obama administration is expected to release draft regulations for how federal money will be distributed for those competitive education-reform grants.

Earlier this month, Gregoire said Washington may not be able to compete for the first round of grants because the state seems unlikely to qualify for federal benchmarks, including merit pay for teachers and charter schools.
