Baby boy killed in crash near Lynden

The Washington State Patrol is looking for the driver of an SUV who fled after it crashed into a semi-truck near Lynden, killing a baby boy who had been in his mother's lap.

LYNDEN, Wash. —

The Washington State Patrol is looking for the driver of an SUV who fled after it crashed into a semi-truck near Lynden, killing a baby boy who had been in his mother's lap.

Trooper Keith Leary said the SUV crossed the center line Tuesday night on Highway 546.

The 25-year-old mother from Sumas was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with internal injuries. The baby died at the scene. The truck driver was not injured.

The man who was driving the SUV fled the scene on foot. Troopers found empty beer bottles in the SUV.

The mother did not wear a seat belt. A car-seat was unused.

Leary says investigators had trouble communicating with the woman who speaks Mixteco, an indigenous language spoken in Mexico.
