State troopers investigated in seagull clubbing

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is investigating allegations that two state troopers are responsible for the fatal clubbing of three seagulls on the roof of a Seattle ferry terminal.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is investigating allegations that two state troopers are responsible for the fatal clubbing of three seagulls on the roof of a Seattle ferry terminal.

Washington State Patrol Capt. Jeff DeVere says the two troopers were placed on administrative leave after the Thursday incident at Colman Dock.

The case was turned over to fish and wildlife officials on Monday.

Fish and wildlife enforcement chief Bruce Bjork says it's illegal under state statute to maliciously kill protected wildlife, a misdemeanor that carries a maximum fine of $5,000 and a year in jail. Bjork says seagulls fall under that protection.

DeVere says the State Patrol will conduct its own administrative review following the criminal investigation.
