Seattle light rail preview for Murray, Nickels

U.S. Sen. Patty Murray and Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels are set for a preview ride Friday afternoon on Seattle's new Link light rail line.

SEATTLE —

U.S. Sen. Patty Murray and Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels are set for a preview ride Friday afternoon on Seattle's new Link light rail line.

Both are scheduled to speak at the Westlake Station in the downtown area, the northern end of the 13.9-mile Sound Transit line. It's the first phase of a network that's expected to grow to 55 miles by 2023.

After the speeches, officials and reporters are getting a preview ride to the Tukwila station at the southern end of the line and back.

Passenger service on the new Link system begins Saturday.

Murray, head of the Senate Appropriations transportation subcommittee, helped secure millions of dollars in federal aid for the project. Nickels is chairman of Sound Transit.
