Dining for the sport of it: Local man competes in 'Super Bowl of eating'

Erik "The Red" Denmark, a 31-year-old Boeing worker, placed eighth in the Super Bowl of eating (and was seen doing it on ESPN): Nathan's Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest in New York City — downing 38 dogs in 10 minutes. Not remotely obese, Denmark approaches eating like a sport.

In a time of rising unemployment, financial crisis and dwindling global resources, here's a mouthful of irony: A rising star of the old-fashioned gluttony contest — now called the sport of "competitive eating" — is from liberal Seattle.
