Man charged in terrorist case lived in Cheney

CHENEY, Wash. —

A Somali-American man arrested in an international terrorist case in Minnesota is a former Eastern Washington University student.

School officials in Cheney tell The Spokesman-Review newspaper that 25-year-old Abdifatah Yusuf Isse studied economics from January 2003 to at least December 2007. He never earned a degree.

The newspaper also reports that Isse was convicted of unlawfully issuing bank checks in 2005 and possessing alcohol as a minor in 2003.

In a federal indictment unsealed Monday in St. Paul, Minn., Isse and 26-year-old Salah Osman Ahmed are charged with providing material support to a terrorist conspiracy.

They're accused of recruiting soldiers from Somali immigrant families to join militant factions linked with al-Qaida.
