Ahoy! Milk-carton showboats take over Green Lake

Seafair calls it the summer's largest boat race — at least on Green Lake.

Seafair calls it the summer's largest boat race — at least on Green Lake.

Saturday's Allstate Milk Carton Derby drew nearly 100 entrants who collectively used between 25,000 and 35,000 milk cartons to build their racing vessels in a competition for $10,000 in prizes.

The main challenge for entrants was to keep their ships together and afloat. The big winner, which garnered the Grand Showboat Award, was boat No. 436, "Armed and Mysterious."

The 39th annual derby also gathered 500 pounds of food and $500 donated to Northwest Harvest.
