No major glitches in bag-screening system at Sea-Tac

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport officials say there have been no major glitches so far in a new $300-million fully automated screening system for checked baggage that's been up and running since November.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport officials say there have been no major glitches so far in a new $300-million fully automated screening system for checked baggage that's been up and running since November. The automated screening system, with some 15 miles of conveyor belts, takes every checked bag from airline check-in counters through an X-ray screening machine "looking for illegal items that would be in those bags that shouldn't be on an aircraft," said Sea-Tac Airport spokesman Perry Cooper. Officials said the old screening system was more labor-intensive and required baggage to be handled by several people.
