Bellevue to stores: round up stray shopping carts or face fines

The Bellevue City Council unanimously approved a new shopping cart ordinance Monday night, voting 5-0 to start fining stores that refuse to collect abandoned shopping carts.

The Bellevue City Council unanimously approved a new shopping cart ordinance Monday night, voting 5-0 to start fining stores that don't collect their abandoned shopping carts.

The ordinance also would make taking a cart more than 100 feet from retail property a civil infraction, and would require signs to educate people about the law.

Taking a labeled cart from retail property is already a misdemeanor theft under state law.

Stray shopping carts are a particular problem in the Crossroads area, where they are wheeled from the mall and abandoned at bus stops, in apartment complexes and on sidewalks.
