Layoffs planned at Rainier School as DSHS deals with budget cuts

Layoffs were announced this week at the Rainier School residential facility for adults with developmental disabilities.

Layoffs were announced this week at the Rainier School residential facility for adults with developmental disabilities.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) confirmed Thursday that a number of employees had been notified of the layoffs, but she said the exact number and which positions had not been finalized.

The layoffs are part of sweeping cuts throughout DSHS at a time when the state is making billions of dollars in budget reductions.

According to one employee, 40 people were notified Wednesday they would be losing their jobs.

A report on resident protection written last year by Disability Rights Washington said the safety of residents was compromised even before the cuts by the facility's reliance on undertrained staff and employees working excessive overtime.

The residential facility houses about 440 developmentally disabled adults.
