An ex-Fort Lewis Army Ranger who led a bank holdup is charged with trying to kill a fellow robber behind bars.
The complaint against 22-year-old Luke E. Sommer, a U.S.-Canadian dual citizen, was unsealed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Tacoma. He's charged with assault with intent to commit murder and assault with a deadly weapon on 20-year-old Nathan R. Dunmall of Chilliwack, British Columbia.
An FBI agent writes that Sommer, believing Dunmall cooperated with the government, attacked him with a blade made from part of a stair-step exercise machine on Jan. 23 at the Federal Detention Center in SeaTac.
Sommer, Dunmall and three others are serving time for the takeover-style robbery of a Bank of America branch in Tacoma on Aug. 7, 2006. They got more than $50,000.
