A man shot by a Seattle police officer Wednesday afternoon after a pursuit linked to the robbery of a Shoreline bank is believed to have been involved in three other robberies earlier in the week, Seattle police said Thursday.
The 36-year-old man, whose identity has not been disclosed, remains under guard at Harborview Medical Center with "non-life-threatening injuries," police said. When he is released, he will be booked into King County Jail for investigation of robbery and assault, a Seattle Police spokesman said.
The man was shot after he slammed into an officer's patrol car while trying to flee in a stolen pickup, police said. The man also struck two other vehicles, slightly injuring a man and two children, who suffered minor injuries and were treated at Harborview, and released, police said.
The shooting and chaos that followed occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m. near the intersection of Greenwood Avenue North, Holman Road and North 105th Street.
Police said a Bank of America branch in the 1100 block of North 205th Street in Shoreline had been robbed about 90 minutes before the shooting, and employees there had tied the suspect to a silver Dodge Ram pickup, which police later spotted in North Seattle and began following.
Police said the pickup had been reported stolen in Seattle.
An officer suffered minor injuries when the suspect rammed his patrol car, police said. A police spokesman said he was a 22-year veteran of the Seattle police force, but his identity was not released.
The police detective that shot the suspect, a member of a SPD-FBI violent-crimes task force, is a 10-year veteran Seattle police officer, the police spokesman said. His identity also was not disclosed.
The police spokesman said the detective had been involved in one other shooting incident, which occurred in Seattle on May 14, 2004.
Besides the Shoreline bank robbery on Wednesday, Seattle police said the hospitalized man in custody is believed to have robbed an espresso stand in the 14300 block of Greenwood Avenue North on Sunday; a Chase Bank branch in the 5500 block of 22nd Avenue Northwest in Ballard on Tuesday, and attempted to rob a Bank of America branch in the 400 block of North 85th Street on Monday.
