Bicyclist killed Wednesday night is identified

A bicyclist killed late Wednesday night when he was struck by a motorist on an Aurora Avenue North offramp has been identified by the King County Medical Examiner's office as John U. Leoni, 35.

Police said Leoni was crossing Dexter Way North when he was struck by the car about 10:15 p.m. He was found dead at the scene just east of Aurora when medics arrived shortly after he was hit, Seattle police spokesman Mark Jamieson said.

Police arrested the 26-year-old driver for investigation of vehicular homicide and said an officer's evaluation showed signs of impairment, Jamieson said.

"Those signs were observed and the driver was taken into custody," Jamieson said. A blood draw was completed on the suspect, and lab results are pending, police said.

The driver was taken to Harborview Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

According to the police spokesman, the driver turned off Aurora at the Dexter exit. After the car turned onto Dexter, it struck the bicyclist, who was crossing the road, Jamieson said.
