$26.5 million boost for health centers

Washington, D.C.

Washington state will receive $26.5 million in federal funds to boost services at community health centers, first lady Michelle Obama announced Monday.

The money will be used to purchase new equipment and expand the use of electronic health records at centers, which provide preventive and primary care to patients regardless of their ability to pay. Fees are based on income.

The White House estimates that dependence on community health centers, which already serve 17 million people nationwide, is expected to increase by about 2 million people during the next two years.

The Obama administration already has pledged nearly $500 million to expand services and construct and renovate health centers countrywide.
