Safety rules sought for salmon habitat

Seattle

The Metropolitan King County Council voted Monday to direct County Executive Kurt Triplett to develop rules to protect rafters and swimmers when the county places logs and trees into rivers and streams as salmon habitat.

The council unanimously passed the ordinance, sponsored by Councilmember Larry Phillips of Seattle.

In other action, the council voted unanimously to give stronger protection to employee whistle-blowers from retaliation when they report misconduct or illegal actions in government.

The ordinance, sponsored by Councilmember Dow Constantine of Seattle, gives workers more time to file complaints and gives the county ombudsman — not supervisors in employees' own departments — authority to investigate claims of retaliation.
