Spokane cop indicted in death of disabled man

SPOKANE - A federal grand jury has indicted a Spokane police officer for striking and tasering a developmentally disabled man who died in 2006 after a confrontation with police.

SPOKANE — A federal grand jury has indicted a Spokane police officer for striking and tasering a developmentally disabled man who died in 2006 after a confrontation with police.

Officer Karl Thompson was charged with repeatedly striking Otto Zehm with a baton and tasering him during a confrontation in a convenience store.

The indictment contends Thompson deprived Zehm of his civil rights and also made a false statement to investigators.

U.S. Attorney James McDevitt said Thompson will likely be the only officer indicted in the case. City officials have said Zehm refused police orders to drop a two-liter bottle of soda he was holding, and fought with officers.
