Renton's 130-acre wetland project unveiled

The 130-acre Springbrook Creek Wetland and Habitat Mitigation Bank was unveiled Friday in Renton. The site is the largest in the Puget Sound region.

Completion of a 130-acre wetland and trail project was celebrated Friday in Renton, where the city of Renton, Washington State Department of Transportation and other agencies collaborated on the region's first urban-wetland bank, created to offset habitat damage caused by development projects. Located just south of Interstate 405 off Oakesdale Avenue, the Springbrook Creek project is designed to provide habitat for herons, hawks, fish and other wildlife — and trails for people, too. Construction of the $16 million project began in 2007.
