Cherry harvest under way in Wash.

Washington's cherry harvest is under way and officials say this could be a state record crop.

PASCO, Wash. —

Washington's cherry harvest is under way and officials say this could be a state record crop.

The harvest is projected at 200,000 tons. The Washington Field Office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service says that would be 19 percent larger than the previous state record of 168,000 tons, set in 2006.

Andrew Willis of the Washington State Fruit Commission says recent sun and dry weather are making for good quality as well as quantity. And Patrick Sullivan of Sullivan Orchards north of Pasco says he's been able to get all the workers he needs to pick his cherries.

Sullivan likes what he sees in the fresh-picked fruit: good color, good size, good condition - no bird pecks and no scratches.

Last year's crop was hit hard by spring frosts.
