Bellingham, Wash., police seek lawn killers

BELLINGHAM — Bellingham police are trying to figure out who has been using a chemical spray to cause as much as $100,000 damage to lawns, trees and shrubs across the city.

The vandals are targeting everything from strip malls to condos and apartment complexes. There have been six reports of herbicide damage so far this year and five last year.

In all, nearly 60,000 square feet of lawn, about 100 shrubs and a number of trees have been killed or damaged.

Police spokesman Mark Young says the culprit has access to commercial herbicides and knows how to use them to kill plants.

Police are offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
