Small music venues exempt from tax

Starting next month, small music venues in Seattle will be exempt from the city's admissions tax, a move the city says will cost little and provide an incentive for small businesses to hire musicians and play live music.

Usually, music venues pay a tax of 5 cents on every dollar in ticket sales to the city. Under the exemption, small venues that hold fewer than 1,000 people but have live music at least three times a week won't have to pay that tax.

The city believes about 65 music venues will take advantage of the exemption. It's expected to cost the city about $300,000 a year.
