Leaking Bainbridge Island sewage pipe repaired
New estimates say a corroded Bainbridge Island sewage pipe near the Winslow ferry terminal leaked about twice as much untreated sewage on the beach at Eagle Harbor last week as originally estimated.
New estimates say a corroded Bainbridge Island sewage pipe near the Winslow ferry terminal leaked about twice as much untreated sewage on the beach at Eagle Harbor last week as originally estimated.
The new estimates released Friday were between 287,000 and 493,000 gallons of untreated sewage. Initial estimates were 140,000 gallons.
The Kitsap Sun says the Public Works Department's staff revised the number after concluding that the leak probably started two days earlier than when it was discovered on May 30. The estimate revision came after the staff reviewed the Winslow sewer plant daily flow records over the 15 days before, during and after the leak.
According to the Bremerton newspaper, the new assessment means sewage likely leaked from the pipe for five days before it was fixed on June 2.
