Starting today, the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel will be open nights and weekends.

That means the tunnel's 18 King County Metro and Sound Transit bus routes can stay underground late.

New tunnel hours are 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday through Saturday, and 6 a.m. to midnight Sundays. The longer hours are in preparation for the start of light-rail service on July 18. Until now, the tunnel has closed at 7 p.m.

Also today, Metro opens its Burien Transit Center, a $12.5 million project with shelters and six bus bays.
