McChord squadron commander sentenced for sex crime

A McChord Air Force Base squadron commander was sentenced to 11 months in prison for having inappropriate sexual contact with a staff sergeant.

MCCHORD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. —

A McChord Air Force Base squadron commander was sentenced to 11 months in prison for having inappropriate sexual contact with a staff sergeant.

The News Tribune of Tacoma reports Lt. Col. Steven J. DiMatteo was convicted earlier this month at a court martial.

The incident with the man happened in February of 2008 when a squadron of C-17 cargo planes led by DiMatteo, the 10th Airlift Squadron, was deployed at Incirlik Air Base in Turkey.

His lawyer said Thursday DiMatteo will appeal.

The 18-year Air Force veteran has served in military operations in Bosnia, Somalia, Afghanistan and Iraq.
