A propane tank from a backyard barbecue exploded late this morning, igniting a blaze that spread quickly and extensively damaged two Magnolia homes while homeowners looked on.
Fire officials are now trying to determine if the tank was defective or human error was to blame.
No one was hurt in the fire that erupted on the back deck of the new two-story home in the 4400 block of 36th Avenue, near Discovery Park.
As the fire spread, a couple with a baby and other small children were able to flee, while the blaze then ignited a neighbor's house. The owner of the second house heard the tank explode and also was able to escape unharmed, fire officials and witnesses said.
More than 50 Seattle firefighters fought the fire before dousing it after about 45 minutes, Seattle Fire spokeswoman Helen Fitzpatrick said. Damage estimates weren't immediately available.
