Benton City chicken farmers cultivate community

BENTON CITY — Benton City farmers Jamie Calley and Stephanie Green are cultivating a community along with their chickens, eggs and vegetables.

BENTON CITY, Benton County — Benton City farmers Jamie Calley and Stephanie Green are cultivating a community along with their chickens, eggs and vegetables.

They join with other local farms to slaughter free-range chickens, sharing the scalding and plucking equipment. They also care for neighbors' goats and chickens when the farmers need a getaway.

Calley and Greene told The Tri-City Herald that community farming became a goal after they bought the 30-acre farm about three years ago and neighbors learned they could help each other.

The community extends to farmers markets in Richland and Prosser and restaurants like Prosser's Wine O'clock. Chef Laurie Kennedy likes to support farmers by serving fresh, local food.
