Jury tells Microsoft to pay $200M in patent fight

A federal jury in Tyler, Texas, has ordered Microsoft Corp. to pay $200 million for infringing on a Canadian technology company's patent.

SEATTLE —

A federal jury in Tyler, Texas, has ordered Microsoft Corp. to pay $200 million for infringing on a Canadian technology company's patent.

The decision was announced in U.S District Court for the Eastern District of Texas on Wednesday, Microsoft said.

Last March, Toronto-based i4i LLP sued the world's largest software maker over the way Word 2003 and Word 2007 customize XML, or "extensible markup language," which is used in encoding and displaying information.

"We feel quite vindicated," said Karen Heater, i4i's president.

In a statement, Microsoft said it will ask the court to overturn the verdict.

"We believe this award of damages is legally and factually unsupported," said David Bowermaster, a Microsoft spokesman, in a statement.
