Continuing flood risk from Green River dam

The Corps of Engineers says it will be a few more wet winters before it fully repairs seepage at the Howard Hanson Dam on the Green River.

SEATTLE —

The Corps of Engineers says it will be a few more wet winters before it fully repairs seepage at the Howard Hanson Dam on the Green River.

Short-term repairs should be in place before November, and the dam does not present an immediate danger of failing. But the corps is warning the downstream cities of Kent, Renton, Auburn and Tukwila to prepare for possible flooding from higher-than-standard flows.

The corps restricted the level of the reservoir in January after two depressions were found in a dam abutment. The corps said Wednesday that its investigation is continuing with testing this summer for seepage.

The short-term repairs may include additional drains and a barrier within the abutment.
