Gov. Gregoire signs Seattle viaduct bill

Gov. Chris Gregoire Tuesday signed a bill that commits $2.8 billion in state money to help build a tunnel under the Seattle waterfront to replace the 56-year-old Alaskan Way Viaduct.

SEATTLE —

Gov. Chris Gregoire Tuesday signed a bill that commits $2.8 billion in state money to help build a tunnel under the Seattle waterfront to replace the 56-year-old Alaskan Way Viaduct.

The tunnel will cost more than $4 billion. Seattle and King County are responsible for the rest. The mile-long elevated section of Highway 99 carries about 100,000 vehicles a day.

Gregoire's office says the governor will go to Tacoma Wednesday to sign the $7.5 billion state transportation budget.

And Gregoire also will go to Grays Harbor College Wednesday to sign a bill that will send $620 million to the county to start building pontoons for a new Highway 520 floating bridge. Sites in Aberdeen and Hoquiam are under consideration for the project.
