Church sex abuse trial opens in Seattle
Retired Seattle Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen is set to testify in a lawsuit over child sex abuse by a priest in the 1970s.
Retired Seattle Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen is set to testify in a lawsuit over child sex abuse by a priest in the 1970s.
In the King County Superior Court trial, two men are seeking unspecified damages from the Seattle Catholic Archdiocese for abuse by a former priest, Patrick O'Donnell.
O'Donnell has acknowledged abusing perhaps 30 boys. An archdiocese lawyer says the two men have refused settlement offers and theirs is the first sex abuse lawsuit to go to trial against the archdiocese, which has settled more than 200 cases out of court.
Hunthausen was archbishop when O'Donnell was sent from Spokane to Seattle in 1976 for sexual deviancy treatment. In the next two years, O'Donnell underwent counseling, earned a Ph.D. in education, worked as a priest and continued to abuse young teenage boys.
In pretrial depositions, Hunthausen said he and other archdiocesan leaders were never told O'Donnell was a serial pedophile.
