Gov. Gregoire signing Seattle viaduct bill
Gov. Chris Gregoire scheduled a ceremony Tuesday afternoon at the Seattle Aquarium to sign the bill committing the state to help build a tunnel under the downtown waterfront.
Gov. Chris Gregoire scheduled a ceremony Tuesday afternoon at the Seattle Aquarium to sign the bill committing the state to help build a tunnel under the downtown waterfront.
The tunnel will replace the 56-year-old Alaskan Way Viaduct, which officials fear could come down in another big earthquake.
The state will pay more than $2 billion of the project that will cost more than $4 billion. Seattle and King County are responsible for the rest.
The mile-long elevated section of Highway 99 carries about 100,000 vehicles a day.
