Light-rail fare dodgers could face $124 fine

Fare dodgers on Sound Transit's new Link light-rail trains would be fined $124, under a policy the agency's finance committee endorsed this afternoon.

Fare dodgers on Sound Transit's new Link light-rail trains would be fined $124, under a policy the agency's finance committee endorsed this afternoon.

There are no station gates, so riders will be under a sort of honor system to buy tickets or use passes, including the new ORCA regional transit card. Sound Transit police or other officials will sometimes roam trains and platforms to check people for proof of payment.

The proposed $124 citation is similar to a traffic ticket.

Transit police could issue 90-day suspensions to riders who are cited three times within 12 months; who fail to pay a fine; or who refuse to leave transit sites when ordered. The same policies will apply to Sounder commuter trains. The citation policy will go to the full transit board next week for final approval.

Light-rail service begins July 18 from downtown Seattle to Rainier Valley and Tukwila.
