Sound Transit gets $44 million from feds early

Sound Transit is getting $44 million for a light rail extension to the University District in Seattle sooner than expected.

Sound Transit is getting $44 million for a light rail extension to the University District in Seattle sooner than expected.

Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., announced today that the money was previously approved under an $813 million grant. It's being released early as part of the federal government's economic stimulus program.

Murray says the early release of the funds will reduce financing costs for the light rail extension between downtown Seattle and the U District.

It's part of $742.5 million in federal transit funds being released for projects nationwide.

The first phase of Sound Transit's Central Link light rail project is set to open July 18. That line runs between downtown Seattle and a station near Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
