WSU budget plan includes 370 job cuts

SPOKANE — Washington State University will cut about 370 jobs and eliminate several academic programs as part of its preliminary plan to cut $54 million from its budget.

SPOKANE — Washington State University will cut about 370 jobs and eliminate several academic programs as part of its preliminary plan to cut $54 million from its budget.

The plan was announced today by President Elson Floyd.

The job losses will occur on all four of the university's campuses and on research and extension units statewide. Of the jobs, 165 are unfilled positions, while the remaining 206 are currently filled and will be eliminated.

The release of the preliminary budget will be followed by a month of discussion. WSU leaders expect to finalize the plan around June 1.

Academic programs slated for elimination include sport management, the Department of Theatre and Dance, the Department of Community and Rural Sociology and the major in German.
